A single goal midway through extra time was enough to knock Craigie out of the Image Printers Cup at the quarter final stage in yet another even match between the two sides.
Both sides tried to gain an early advantage but neither keeper was forced into serious action, and it was almost half an hour before Andy Dewar forced home keeper Alex Mitchell into action then Ian Cumersky brought Craig Weir into the match.
Ryan McKenzie had a half chance for Craigie but was crowded out before Dean Rea shot over for Gretna as the first half ended with more attempts on goal.
Craigie came out attacking at the start of the second half, and Lloyd Dignan and Sammy Hassan came close before Mitchell did well to block from Dignan when he was well placed but after a bright start to the half they were unable to get the vital opening goal, and they almost went behind when Dan Carmichael turned and shot just past before sub Andrew Trestianu had a late chance but Weir saved easily.
Kris O'Neil shot narrowly past early in extra time for Craigie but it was the home side who came closest to breaking the deadlock when Adam McMath's header beat Weir but McKenzie cleared off the line, and McMath then forced Weir into a save before they eventually opened the scoring just before half time in extra time when Cumersky broke from midfield, and fed Carmichael who shot high past Weir.
Carmichael had a chance early in the second period to extend the lead but Weir saved as Craigie pushed forward looking for an equaliser, and he shot narrowly past in the closing minutes as Gretna held on for victory.
The only disappointment for the home side being Curtis Wood shown a second yellow card in the closing seconds. |
